About us
Fish Hoek Service
CenTRE
Hello there! Thank you for popping by our About Us page to find out a bit more about our community service organisation.
Officially, we are The Fish Hoek Service Centre, a registered Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), but you can call us Fish Hoek Mobile Meals.
We take the heart of our constitution and pour it into the preparation and delivery of well-rounded, nutritious meals for homebound and physically challenged individuals, particularly seniors. Our operation not only combats hunger, but offers the promise of a friendly face popping by to deliver the meals multiple times a week which provides vital human connection.
If it weren’t for the generosity of our time-donating volunteers, and financially-donating community, our organisation wouldn’t be in operation.
Our History
In 1981 Mr John Tyers, local MPC and member of False Bay Hospital Board, Mrs Stella Ross and Matron Reichier of False Bay Hospital (among others), discussed the need they identified for assisting the elderly and physically challenged with meal preparation and delivery. By 1983 a working committee was appointed, a constitution was put in place, and so Fish Hoek Service Centre was born.
The service to the community commenced once temporary use of the False Bay Hospital nurses’ kitchen was agreed, cooking and delivery volunteers were recruited and 12 recipients were identified.
A new kitchen was built in 1985/6, funded by the Fish Hoek Service Centre, in conjunction with False Bay Hospital on their land. To this day, our volunteer cooking teams still use this kitchen. The equipment is repaired, maintained and replaced when needed thanks to the generous donations received from the Fish Hoek community.
SERVING THE COMMUNITY
SINCE 1983
If you know of someone within our Fish Hoek valley who is in need of a lovingly prepared, nutritious meal service because they’re unable to prepare or provide for themselves, please get in touch so that our family of volunteers can do what we feel called to do: serve those in need.
